Jesus’ Image

I guy named Voltaire once said, “If God has made us in his image we have returned him the favor.”

I recently read of a test that a college professor gives students every year to start the school year. He asks questions like: “Was Jesus moody?” “Was he an introvert or extrovert?” “Was he aggressive and confronting or gentle and passive?” And many more questions along thees lines are asked.

Then he asks the students to describe themselves. He years ago made an amazing discovery. The students basically saw Jesus as being exactly like themselves. In other words they had made Jesus into their image.

There is great value to being introduced to other cultures via media, reading or friends. It is startling to find out all the differing ways people perceive reality.

I am going to be officiating in a wedding in which the marriage partners have been arranged by the parents. It is part of the people’s culture. And actually statistically arranged marriages are happier and last longer according to research. My problem is the great difficulty with doing premarital counseling. What I know just doesn’t fit. I have made marriage into the image of my culture I am afraid.

My big questions I am meditating upon this morning is, “how am I making Jesus into my image the longer I know him and hang around church?”
