A great author named C.K. Chesterton wrote a great book titled, The Everlasting Man. He nearly apologized for his writing in general. He made a great statement about his writing. He said, “the best book I have ever written was the one I didn’t write.” I thought this was a fantastic thought.
I think the best words I have ever spoken are words I never said. Holding your peace can be the most powerful act we achieve. We live in a world where we pride ourselves on our ability “to tell it like it is.” I have found very often when I have not said my piece I learned latter that my piece was wrong.
I think Jesus was a man of few words.
I would like to write a song on this theme. I am going to title it, “The best words I never spoke.”
I think this is why patience and care in word-speaking is such a high premium in the Bible. It’s because the worst words we have spoken are those we have spoken.
I am often told I am pretty quiet. I have decided better to be that way than the other.
I wanted to tell someone how they hurt the church the other day so badly. But when I thought about it I realized there were so many issues at play there that the best words that would heal were those I left off the page.
If most people are like me – we already know what isn’t said anyway.
