I have a friend with perfect pitch who hates the D chord on guitar. Position one as they call it isn’t quite in the perfect pitch. There’s something about the fret board on most guitars that leaves a little dissonance.
I like dissonance. Dissonance is the feeling that things just don’t match or line up. Something is just a little off center. Life is filled with dissonance. Dissonance makes me seek God. I think you grow to seek God more and know him better if your life has noticeable dissonance.
Consonance is good to. That’s when things seem to fit and line up. Sometimes we confuse consonance with the assurance of God’s presence. I think it is actually just one of the rhythms of life. Let’s call it the C chord.
I really don’t enjoy playing guitar in the key of C. I don’t know exactly why. It sounds better on the guitar. E sounds more natural on a guitar but C is good. I tune my guitar down to D. That way when I chord up the E form I am actually playing in D with a little better sound in my opinion.
Resolution is a good thing too. That’s when everything resolves into a nice conclusion. All great songs do end with a resolution. The human ear craves it. Life has to have a series of resolutions or we feel scattered. Its part of the rhythm of life too. I like a nice strong ending to episodes in my life.
But in the meantime I enjoy the key of D. I like the sense of disjointedness that keeps me seeking the way. There are a lot more discoveries that happen in this phase. It causes a lot more curiosity to rise in my life.
