There is a lot of talk about Passion. I have a number of feelings about passion that I don’t hear often. One of the big questions that leads to success is what do you see as the outcome of your life? What is the real scorecard I have for my life?
I am getting into the Re-Jesusing of things. And I think one’s most important passion comes in one word – Jesus. All other passions or aims are subcategories or distractions.
One of my concerns about seeking your passion as a primary goal of Christianity is that it is primarily an American notion. One has to be up the Maslovian scale to think about passion. It is a suburban educated notion as well.
Most of the world has to talk of survival, tasks, assignments and conflict.
But I do believe in passions. Yet I believe that we often are called to give up our passions to devote our energies to things that don’t interest us. I detest counseling but my pastoral leadership would be deprived if I didn’t do some. I need to know when it is the mature thing to do to go outside my passion.
The second thought I have about passion is that no one really has “A” passion. Most of us who identify passions in our life actually end up with a PORTFOLIO of Passion. No one has just one passion. We have a medley of them. I am passionate about music and worship but also about communication, a bit of leadership creativity drives me and I like to figure out the big picture. I am curious about how things work. The why doesn’t bother me much. I have a passion to know how and why they work.
Finding the PORTFOLIO of your passions leads to the discovery of who you are. This is why the Bible talks about gifts and not “gift” in the person’s life.
