Biology or Psychology

I think one of the most significant fronts we face as Christians interested in outreach and healing is the tension between biology’s influence on behavior and the will and psychological bearings on behavior. There is no doubt that at least “biology plus psychology equals behavior.” But how does the spiritual component enter in here?

It is now irrefutable that there are people biologically predisposed to criminal behavior. How do we do ministry and bring hope for such people? Does God call us to be healers of biology? It seems Jesus was.

Broken humanity needs to be healed and rescued more than legally handled in the theological sense. Are there occasions where biology totally neutralizes will? I think so. Man needs his will healed.

Things aren’t as simple as we once thought. We now know addicts are often predisposed to addiction, depressed people the same. And we are finding a need as Christian ministers to network with professionals in such fields to see total freedom on the part of our converts.

David B. Wolfe has written: “the conscious mind can still veto much of what the brain proposes through its exercise of free will, though not everything because your conscious mind doesn’t have enough RAM to review everything the brain does on your behalf.”
