Only Baby Boomers can remember vinyl discs (well maybe our parents). I still prefer vinyl discs because I prefer the analog format. But I also enjoy a two-sided presentation of albums. Various groups can still purchase vinyls in rare occasions but all records when I was growing up were vinyl records with about 20 minutes of music on each side.
And this is what I most enjoy about old vinyl records. Twenty minutes of one record is about all I can stand. It could be I am conditioned this way but I don’t think so. CD’s have too much music on them. It’s just too much to be expected to listen to one hour or more of a CD. Not to mention the press that they were scratch proof. They are very scratch prone.
I have been downloading some albums from iTunes. It works well. I like most that one can buy one song at a time this way. And for the price of an album you can purchase songs from 15 artists, transfer it to your ipod, and you are on you way. I love my ipod.
But I still prefer my turntable that twirls 12-inch vinyl discs around as music comes through. I also enjoy the shuffle effect on my ipod. This allows your music gear to randomly select one song from numerous different CD’s or ipod tunes one after the other.
I am suppose to have a special spiritual application here. I think the CD industry would sell more records if they would only put ten songs on their products. And I think churches could find more ears if we did buy into more is less. I honestly think Boomers are more in tune with vinyl churches than CD churches.
There is a resurgence of vinyl interest from Millenial kids today. So all these records I have could be worth something in the future as well.
I’ve got to go. I have a twenty-minute disc coming to an end. I am going to put Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band on.
