Big Words: Sanctification

I Peter 1:2 "…[T]he sanctifying work of the Spirit…

Sanctification means to be set apart for specific purposes. And to be special in behavior and make up as a result. If you are sanctified you are different. You march to a different drum.

When we are good when we don’t mean to be that is the sanctification of the Spirit at work. So when you find yourself acting in surprising conformity with the way Jesus would act, you are being sanctified.

When I grew up we had a horse. We boarded it with my aunt and uncle’s family.  His name was Lucky. He didn’t like leaving the corral and would run from me when ever I wanted to ride. I would have to corner him and back him into a separate corral away from the other horses. I sanctified him. He was set apart for me only and for a good ride.

So when the Bible and others talk about being sanctified, this is what they mean.
You are now in a different corral being prepared for a ride with the Master.  My first pastor told a story several times about two horses…one was able to be trained and pull a horse and carriage. He held his head high with his purpose. Another horse ran wild, broke away from the trainer and ran his own way, anywhere he chose.  He observed the joy the trained horse experienced and the way he held his head high. He was his own master and was a poor one. The other horse was trained for higher purposes. He had let himself be sanctified.
