What would Bono (or Murren) tell himself?
Published by Doug Murren November 29th, 2006 in Deep Thoughts
In a recent interview, Bono, the leader of the group U2, was asked to repeat or review a speech he gave at friend’s art showing. All of the paintings at the show were very large portraits of Bono. He said it was eerie and strange to be staring as so many different views of himself during so many different phases of his life.
The interviewer asked, “What would you say to that young man in the large picture who would eventually lead the most influential rock band in the world?”
Bono’s answer was something like, "Enjoy what you are doing a bit more, don’t try to be so perfect, everything works out in the end."
This interview struck me because I have a few book jackets of books I have written mounted on the walls of our modest home. I can hardly relate to the young man’s picture on several of these books. I looked at one of the photos and asked what would I say to this 35 year old?
Some of my thoughts were far too personal, not sinful just private. But I did have a few things I would tell the kid:
- Enjoy the advances they are more rare than you think.
- Save more money.
- Take extra time in hiring friends and protect them more.
- Don’t let people criticize you for being you.
- Enjoy friends more, they die.
- No relationship or job is forever.
- Starting over isn’t a fun thing to do.
- Feel the ride, it’s fun.
- Show people you love them, they usually don’t assume it.
- Spend more time with your parents
- Read more. Write more
- Keep a journal.

Doug,
I just found your blog. (I am familiar with you through a book I read a number of years ago).
This is a great post! This list is a keeper. As a 53 year old guy, I have similar thoughts as
I look back.
Thanks,
Jim Martin
Doug,
I agree with Jim. And… it’s great to see you blogging!
Thanks,
